Today's economy has turned a lot of valuable employees into consultants. You have oodles of specific knowledge, you know there are companies that can use it, and you want to launch your own consulting business. Trouble is, you are an engineer, an operations manager, an financial analyst, a technical writer... not a marketer.By now you've figured out that marketing yourself as a consultant requires specific action - it's definitely not a case of, "If you build it, they will come." Never fear, I have some ideas to help you establish your reputation as an expert, get your name out there, and begin building your consulting business by the end of the week!Day #1 - Your Marketing PlanYou don't have to spend weeks putting together your business or marketing plan, and you don't have to pay someone to do it for you. The real value of putting together a solid plan is the way it makes you think through different scenarios, the competition, and the product you will be offering. A really great plan will also keep you on track as you build your business and it should be considered a working document - edit and change it as frequently as necessary.Answer each of the following questions in writing and please don't take more than 15 minutes per.Who is your ideal client? Consider size of company, industry, for profit or not. This is your absolute ideal, not a listing of any type of company that might be able to use your services. Describe who you want to work for. Focused marketing will pay off far greater than a shotgun approach. What work do you want to do? Similar to the first question, describe your ideal work. If you would like, you can create a separate description for secondary work. How do you want to work? Telecommute, onsite, or a combination? Do you want to travel? Why does your ideal client want you? Describe your core competencies and how you are different from the average consultant. Now you need to flip it over - What type of client business do you not want to work for? What work do you not want to do? How do you not want to work?Day #2 - Your ResumeYou do need to put some time in to presenting your experience and core competencies in a couple of different ways. First, start with your standard resume. There is much material available on creating a great resume so I'll not spend time on that topic. Once your resume is complete, create the following three complimentary items:One Sheet
Online Bio
Elevator SpeechA One Sheet is marketing collateral about your consulting business, designed to pique the interest of the reader. Where your resume is a professional, legal document that describes in detail where you have been, your One Sheet summarizes where you are going. Use present tense, bullets, lots of white space. Your One Sheet should be able to be read or scanned in a very short amount of time and provide a brief overview of your talents.Next, continue to distill your marketing message down to a 30-second statement that speaks to your value proposition. Your elevator speech is not your job title. When someone asks you what you do and you answer, "I am a consultant," you've just missed an opportunity to market yourself to an interested party. Your elevator speech should tell a story about who you are and what drives you.I am on a mission to assist microbusiness owners in using the Internet to grow their business, interact with customers and clients, and level the playing field against much larger competition. The term "small business" is a misnomer -- there is a vast difference in resources between a small-business with as many as 500 employees, and the entrepreneur who is going it alone. I have first-hand knowledge of the challenges that face these solopreneurs and I help them use Web 2.0 technologies to reach huge audiences with nothing but a great product, a laptop, and a pile of creativity. Finally, create an awesome online bio to be used primarily on LinkedIn and your blog.Judi Young is a writer and entrepreneur on a mission to assist small and micro businesses worldwide in joining the online conversation. Follow her blog..., where you can also link to her on Facebook and Twitter. Day # 3 - Social NetworkingSocial etiquetteHow successful would you be at a live business networking event if you came in like a politician 10 minutes late to a campaign stop -- in a mad hurry to shake every hand and pass out brochures and free pens, spieling off your top three campaign promises, not interested in chatting with and getting to know people, only in talking about yourself, your services, your consulting business. Believe it or not, there are people right now treating social networking as a campaign stop. It's the biggest mistake you can make.Instead, treat your online socializing and networking connections as you treat real live people at networking events:Listen 80%, Talk 20%
Always be polite and respectful
Offer and provide assistance, advice, information
Provide your online business card (web or blog address) for more informationIf you connect with someone who likes and respects you, and has a need for your services, they will seek you out.FacebookYou may already have a personal Facebook page. It is acceptable, even encouraged, to provide your professional contacts a glimpse into your personal life-to a degree. If you use Facebook regularly to keep up with friends and family, post pictures, and make political statements, you may want to consider whether your Facebook activity puts you in the best possible light with your clients. Maintaining a Facebook page is not critical to your success as a consultant, so you may wish to continue using Facebook as your personal site and rely on LinkedIn to socialize professionally. Tip: Farmville, MafiaWars, and other Facebook applications are generally considered to be in bad form in a professional environment.LinkedInLinkedIn is the most important site for a consultant to be active on. How did we connect with past colleagues, current business contacts, and other professionals prior to LinkedIn? Once you have your resume and marketing plan completed, sign up for a LinkedIn personal account (free) and start connecting. The initial LinkedIn process will walk you through connecting to colleagues already in their database. You cannot have too many connections on LinkedIn, so reach out to everyone you have worked with no matter how long ago. Next, connect to everyone you currently do business with-your real estate agent, your insurance agent, your lawyer, baker, and your children's teacher. Now comes the tough part: You must get recommendations in order to build Social Proof. Ask for 20 recommendations via LinkedIn today. Right now. LinkedIn makes it very easy. Just locate the Recommendations selection under Profile and select as many as 200 of your contacts. You can use the standard LinkedIn text in your request or customize it with your own words. LinkedIn sends out an individual message to each of the contacts you specified with your request for a recommendation. Now return the favor. Without being prompted, write recommendations for people you've worked with. View a few recommendations first and simply follow the format.LinkedIn groups are an excellent way to begin to establish yourself as an expert in your field and to provide assistance to your new connections worldwide. Search out and join all groups that are interesting. You can find groups based on your industry, hobbies, geographic location, alma mater (don't forget high school), and so on. For the purposes of networking for your consulting business, select groups with more than 1,000 members. LinkedIn limits the number of groups to which you can belong to 50, and some groups require approval by a group manager so there may be a bit of a wait before you can join.Once you join groups that are interesting to you, spend a bit of time perusing active discussions for the group before you dive in and begin answering questions. Finally, status updates-it is important for you to begin posting your status at least three times per day. You can reference a good article you read online (use /bit.ly to shorten URLs), tell everyone what you are working on, or talk about what you had for breakfast. The important thing is that you provide some insight to your day, show that you are being productive, and stay connected.TwitterUnless you want to consult in social media, it is not necessary that you become a twitterer. Tweeting regularly could help you up your social cred and increase contacts, however it is something you can undertake on day five and beyond.Day #4 - Article Marketing and Your Blog LinkedIn and Article Marketing are the one-two punch of your marketing strategy. You will begin writing industry-specific articles that establish you as a thought-leader and a subject-matter expert and you will publish them to your blog. You will also blast them out to Article Marketing sites and to Digg.Article Marketing simply means publishing your original article to the Internet via sites that are dedicated to distributing such articles. Effective Article Marketing increases your overall exposure and establishes you as an expert in your field.Your blog primarily exists as a landing place to hold your articles and allow your community to connect with you. Yahoo, Google, and Posterous are very quick and easy blogs to set up. I use and love Wordpress, but will admit that there was a learning curve in understanding the interface, setting up widgets and so on. I recommend you set up a very easy blog to begin and roll that in to a more advanced platform down the road.Writing and publishing articles for mass consumption is a bit daunting, so I've come up with this quick exercise to help. Find a kitchen timer and set it for 2 hours.1. Create a free account on EzineArticles.2. Create a free account on Digg.3. Write an industry-specific article, in under 90-minutes.Unless you regularly write for your industry, you might have a problem getting started. I personally stared off in to space for two days trying to think of a topic. Just pick something, anything, to get you started. Your second article will be much better, and the third better than that. How about the top 5 things I need to know about your industry? Or top 5 things to consider when hiring a consultant?4. Publish your article on EzineArticles and Digg.Whew. You did it. Ok, so I rushed you and this first one probably won't get picked up, but the publishing process should no longer be scary. Pretty soon you will be jotting down article ideas on gum wrappers while stuck in traffic. There are many other Article Marketing distribution sites that you can use; a quick Google search will produce many hits. Try businessknowhow and buzzle, and then find more on your own. Each time you write a new article, spend a few minutes searching discussion forums for appropriate conversations. Quote your article as an answer to a question and be sure to provide a link to your blog.Day #5 and Ongoing- Use Your ResourcesJust as you will be giving away some of your key knowledge in order to establish credibility, so are others. There is much free, valuable information on the Internet. Check out my blog to find links to sites aimed at small and micro business owners and more tips.

Can You Successfully Build More Than One Network Marketing Company?
Is it a good idea to be distributor for more than one MLM company? Logic would suggest that it is. Today there are many network marketing companies that fail. Some companies are illegal and are shut down by the government. Some companies must go through massive restructuring to survive. Just last week, a publicly traded company terminated it's MLM pay plan in favour of direct sales because it couldn't afford to pay both the investors and the distributors at the same time. Some network marketing company owners just plain have no integrity. They start out as a network marketing company to save money on advertising and get all of their distributors to take the risk in putting their name out there. Once they have enough customers, they just terminate the pay plan when they feel like it. Trust me, this has happened.Company failures, shutdowns, restructuring, changes to the compensation plan, all of these things affect distributors adversely. Not to mention that some companies state in their policies and procedures they can terminate your distributorship at any time without reason and keep the downline you've built for them.So logic would dictate that to minimise your risk of these things adversely affecting you, you should opt for multiple streams of income and participate in several network marketing opportunities at once. That way, if one of your opportunities goes down, you'd still be getting income from the others.Uh...no.What you end up with is not multiple streams of income, rather multiple streams of outgo. If you're one of these guys who's signed up to multiple MLM deals, how's that working for you? (I want to know, please leave me a comment.) How much money are you making from each of them?A short time ago, I was prospected by a nice lady and she told me that she offers her prospects multiple MLM deals. This lady and her husband have built large organisations in several companies before, but her "new" way of business is sponsoring her prospects into up to 6 different MLM businesses at a time. This was her reasoning for doing business this way..."No one company will satisfy all of yours or your customers' needs. Your customers are more likely to stick with you if you offer them a range of good quality products and services." And this is exactly the reason why most people will fail if they decide to build their business this way. Why?Firstly, network marketing IS NOT a product business. If you want to be a one-stop-shop for all of your customers, that's fine, but that's not what network marketing is about. Network marketing is a relationships business. Quality products and pay plans are here to facilitate business, but your job is to focus on building relationships.Secondly you're not focused. Your time, money and energy is dissipated in trying to promote several unrelated products and services that you don't really know all that well. One of the programs you promote might be a real winner that could make you ultra successful if you focused on it, but the others duds are sapping just as much of your energy and you go backwards.Thirdly is how your customers perceive you. If you show any signs of ambiguity to your customers and prospects, you will drive them away. You ruin your quality perception, nobody will remember your brand and nobody will take you seriously because you're weak everywhere and strong nowhere.Specialising is quality. That's why specialty hand bag stores can charge much more for hand bags, specialty sports shoes stores can charge much more for sports shoes. And it's why at Target or Kmart you can't buy brand name items because they don't want that cheap image. In my opinion, you are far more likely to have success if you do your homework and find a high quality opportunity with good people, a good pay plan and good systems. What about those risks that I talked about earlier?Well, that's why you need to do your due diligence with a fine-tooth-comb for anything that you promote, and be confident that good people are in charge.

Success in Any MLM - The 3 Basic Tools For Success
Most network marketers have all kinds of specialized "tools" to help them be more productive. When it comes down to life, everyone needs food and water, clothing and shelter. When it comes down to network marketing there are also 3 basics needs.Computer and Internet Service:If you're going to be a truck driver, you need a reliable truck. If you're going to be a network marketer, you need a reliable computer and internet service. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a computer will all the bells and whistles. An average expense of $1,000 to $1,500 will, in 99% of the time, give you more computer "power" than you will ever use.The internet, however, is another story. The faster, the better! If you have ANY opportunity to get the internet via your cable service, take it! Most cable companies will offer a "digital plan" with your cable programming, and the time savings, (waiting for those web pages to load), is worth the money. You don't have cable yet... Keep reading. You may decide on that installation tomorrow.Telephone:All marketers need a telephone, and most have unlimited local and long distance service. Those people in the US will need US and Canada, while those outside the US will include their local country, and if they are marking in the US, US and Canadian service.Ask you telephone supplier what an unlimited plan will cost, and then look to your internet provider for a quote. Most internet providers have a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) package. This is where you phone is hooked up to the internet and 98% of the transmission is via the internet. Don't worry about how it works. It just works, and the cost savings can be substantial when compared to traditional telephone plans. Now that "digital" plan with your cable company, including high speed internet service and unlimited local and long distance is looking very attractive. Even if you don't watch TV, it may be worth the price.Training:You need some professional training, not only on the mechanics of network marketing, but the psychology of network marketing. Find a company who will help you set up that web site and host it for you. You don't need to have a PhD in computers to be successful. Today's new technology is no more difficult that writing an email. You will need some assistance with prospecting, basically learning how to approach those target leads and learning what to say. Then you need assistance on how to present your products and service. This takes some time to master, so be sure your training company has a lot of help available in this area.In Conclusion:Every craftsman I have ever met has had a set of "tools" they use in their profession. As a network marketer, you need to make sure your "tools" are the best you can find. Remember a "poor craftsman blames his tools", even though he was the one who bought them.

MLM and Mission Impossible
I was tweeting this morning and came across some sad news in "current events." Actor Peter Graves, who portrayed secret agent Jim Phelps in the Mission:Impossible TV series, passed away. You might also recall his role in the comedy movie "Airplane."I loved Mission:Impossible and since I was looking for new article ideas, I could not resist exploring how MLM is like Mission:Impossible! Now, we all know that MLM success is NOT impossible, since we all know some people who have succeeded (some wildly so!) However we are also often reminded of the low percentage of people who succeed. So just what did the IMF (Impossible Mission Force) Leader so when he got his assignments (that self-destructed in 60 seconds!)Pick the agents who will work the assignment
Come up with a plan
Interject some cool gadgets and special effects
Come up with disguises as needed
Pull it off!Choosing your MLM "secret agents" involves targeting people likely to be leaders. Some believe in targeting people with MLM experience while some believe you should avoid them. That's the subject of another article! When it comes to having a great plan, that is really a great system for education, prospecting, and following up that everyone who joins your team can plug in to. And the system also gives you some of the gadgets. So what about cool gadgets and special effects? All spy shows have them (James Bond anyone?) I don't know if it is still there, but in 1998 I visited a very cool restaurant called The Safe House in Milwaukee where they have all sorts of spy stuff including a 1-way mirror in the ladies room and even a secret entry! We really don't have to rely on smoke and mirrors to succeed in MLM but we do need to stay abreast of technology. Very few people succeed today with strictly the phone, mail, and meetings! And the rules have even changed for the phone with the national "do not call" registry. There are rules governing the usage of email lists as well that we must follow. You can't do MLM without a website these days, and your company replicated site just isn't going to do the whole job either because it doesn't brand YOU. You should also understand and use social media. So far I am getting along without a "smart phone" but I am sure I'll get one someday soon! What about disguises? I have seen some people do some very deceptive things in MLM and I don't agree with those tactics, nor do I use them myself. There is just one instance where you might need to "withhold" what business you are in (and you are not pretending to be something you are not; you are just not telling the whole story!) When you are advertising your website and branding yourself you will come across some websites that censor information and prohibit the mention of MLM or network marketing. You can either avoid them, or you can do as one of my mentors suggested and "think outside the box."At first I thought this was a waste of time, since it certainly makes it more difficult to target the right people and give them a "call to action." But then I got to thinking, what is wrong with a "2 pronged" approach? On the websites that do not censor, go ahead and mention MLM and ask people to visit your site, download your ebook, order your DVD, or whatever gets you leads. On the sites that do censor, just cover more general topics of interest to anyone who does business by networking and serving people. You can still have a link to your website and if the viewers/readers like you, they will check it out.I hope this has been helpful. I would like to mention that I have recently submitted several other articles which cover certain segments of this topic in more detail, so i hope you'll check out all of them to get the whole picture!RIP, Peter Graves. We'll miss you!

Ardyss Compensation Plan Pitfalls
So what are the Ardyss compensation plan pitfalls you ask?Well, let me first say this. Ardyss international is a solid company that manufactures high quality products. They really are a great company that fills a huge need in the marketplace.Let me also say that many people have made a lot of money with the Ardyss compensation plan.So what's my beef?Well, here's the thing.MY BIGGEST PET PEEVEI love FREEDOM. That's really what network marketing is all about right? Freedom is what this industry has given to me. Time to be with my family. Time to do the things that I really want to do like spend time with my wife and kids. You really have to be careful in this industry because there are company's out there that tend to preach freedom on the one hand and then turn around and take it from their reps on the other. I'm not saying that Ardyss is one of them. I don't believe they are. However, while reading the Ardyss compensation plan, I did notice a few pitfalls that I would tend to shy away from. Once again, people are making money with this plan. You can make a fortune with it too if you know how to market. That being said, you should be aware of some of these aspects of the plan before you commit to building a long term business with Ardyss.SO WHAT ARE THE PITFALLS?The Ardyss compensation plan is composed of an 8 level unilevel. This simply means that anyone you personally sponsor will be placed on your first generation and you can go as wide as you want. If you sponsor 100 people, your front line could potentially have 100 spots filled. When your personal sponsors enroll people, they are then placed on their first generation. That would be your 2nd. generation. Thus, the plan fills out.So what's the problem? There are 2 policies in the Ardyss compensation plan that I don't really like. The first one is the volume requirements put in place in order for you to get paid on levels 2 through 8. Let's say you enroll someone, who enrolls someone who enrolls someone and that duplicates out to 8 levels very quickly. If you don't meet the group volume requirements put in place by the company, you'll only get paid for order of that first distributor you brought into the company. That doesn't sit well with me. None of that business would have come to the company had you not enrolled that 1st distributor so why shouldn't you get paid on it? Here is the other stipulation. In order to advance and get paid on more levels than 1, not only do you have to meet the volume requirement set by the company, no more than 40% of the volume can come from any 1 leg. So lets say you start a leg that goes crazy. You enroll a superstar that brings 100K in volume. There is a good portion of that volume that you won't get paid on.CONCLUSIONIn all fairness to the company, they make the products, they provide the opportunity so they have the right to set quotas and stipulations. And certainly, you can make a lot of money with the Ardyss compensation plan if you are able to play the game by the Ardyss rules. If you know how to market and get people to come to you none of these stipulations will be a problem for you. If you are stuck in a position where you are struggling to find new people, these stipulations will be a big problem for you.I choose to build my business in a way that is fun and easy. I have developed myself and my marketing to a point where people come to me, credit card in hand ready to buy.

No More Rejections - Network Marketing Recruiting Without Phone Calls
If you're involved in network marketing chances are that you've experienced rejection when calling leads. Whether you've bought a hot list of supposedly highly targeted leads or generated them yourself, somehow they just aren't all that hot after few bad phone calls. Rejection is the one of the biggest reasons that people fail with mlm or direct sales companies because it leads to a fear of the most vital activities in the business - enrolling new distributors and getting new customers. No one likes to be rejected. The good news is that there are steps you can take to drastically lower the number of rejections you get during your network marketing recruiting.Step 1 is to stop calling lead lists or lists of potential business partners. It just doesn't work. Instead, start building a list of qualified entrepreneurs that are "mlm buyers" (people that already buy into the business model.) There are numerous ways to get your website in front of these people. Stop focusing on recruiting people directly for your business, and start offering training and business coaching of some sort to help them build whatever business they are a part of.Step 2 is to begin positioning yourself as a leader and a trusted source of information to that list through email. Send an email to that list EVERY day. People involved in mlm love anything that will help them get more leads for less money, so an easy topic would be anything having to do with that. Share current events, tell stories about your experience within the industry, or even share your personal philosophy. Above all, be entertaining. Entertaining your list is key because you want to build a relationship with them and create some reason for people to open your emails every day - giving you a captive audience.Step 3 is recruiting through that same email list. Once you have established yourself as a trusted source of information you will be surprised at how many people will be willing to join you in whatever opportunity you choose. Doing the work upfront and building that relationship initially will make network marketing recruiting almost rejection free and give you far more fulfillment in your business.

800% Increase of Millionaire Households
In an article I read, the net worth per household of 1 million or more went up by 800% in the last 10 years and is now at 8.4 million Americans which is almost 8% of the population. Do you have your piece of the pie? Are you living the American Dream? If not and you want to live the life of a millionaire than keep reading, you may find out why you are not there yet. What I am about to share with you will literally move your home business to the next level, get you to where you want be, I guarantee it.There are 4 components that make the 21st century millionaire. The most obvious one is the first one. You must be a "hard worker". Now many people work hard today, some will work 60+ hours each week. They are the kind of people that cannot stand the loafer or the one that complaint just for having to do its job.All 21st century millionaires belong to some kind of "networking" group. They understand the importance of being associated to people like minded. This approach has been used for decades now. If you are not part of any mastermind or networking group, you should make that a part of your plan or strategy to get involve in at least 2 groups. You must be "tenacious". All self made millionaire had a major setback or failure in their quest for success. They use it as a learning curve. That is usually the main difference between a successful entrepreneur and one that quits. How do you handle defeat? The 21st century millionaire knows how to "position themselves." They make their choices based solely on earning possibilities. They will only get involved in a highly profitable business. So, that is not enough to be a hard worker, to be part of a networking group or to be tenacious, because if you decide on a business that only the people at the top make money, what do you think will happen to you? It is kind of like working as a cashier at McDonald's, there is no way for you will become one of the 21st century millionaires doing that.Last, the 21st century millionaires understand that what does not help them move forward actually hurts them. They make very calculated choices when it comes to money, career and who they do business with. How many of the components do you currently have? How many do you need to work on to get on the road to become one of the 21st century millionaires? If you have not had any real success so far with your business, most likely it is because you are missing one of the above. It is never too late to learn and practice any of these components, no matter where you are in your life.To your success, Ghyslain

Network Marketing - Increasing Team Productivity
I saw something today that I thought was absolutely brilliant. A popular article marketing website offered a challenge. What was brilliant was that this was a challenge within a challenge. The site owner began his challenge by asking his members to submit one hundred articles over a one hundred day period. For sixty-six days his members wrote articles. Some members had written their one hundred articles or more at the end of the sixty-six days and some members had only written ten articles at the end of the sixty-six days. It didn't matter which category you fell into, he now offered a brand new thirty day challenge. His challenge was to write thirty more articles in the last thirty days of the challenge. As I read the comments on his blog, I realized how brilliant this idea was. For those members who had already submitted their one hundred articles, the site owner stood a chance of getting another thirty articles for his site from these members. For those members who had given up on the challenge, thinking they wouldn't make the challenge, they now had a reason to write like crazy for the next thirty days. You can apply this same concept to your network marketing team. For example, what if you offered a challenge to your team to recruit ten new team members over a sixty day period? Then, what if during the last week of those sixty days, you now offered a mini challenge of "recruit three new team members this week for a mini prize?" For some of your team members, this might mean they recruit their first ten, plus another three. For other team members, it might mean they get three when they had given up hope of achieving the original ten.If you're offering a sales challenge, what if you offered a ninety day sales challenge of selling $3000 over those ninety days? Then, what if during the last thirty days you said, "I'll offer a mini challenge to those who can sell $1000 in the last thirty days.' Here's what might happen. You might have some team members who complete their $3000 in sales prior to the end of the ninety days. Those same team members may now come and sell an additional $1000 to meet the mini challenge. What about the team member who had a slow start and fell behind in goals to hit the original $3000? Now that team member can jump in with the new mini challenge and possibly produce $1000 in sales for your team. This is a win/win strategy for everyone involved. Your team members win by meeting challenges and producing sales or growing their team. You win by raising the increase your own team will see by offering these mini challenges.Of course, you can't offer mini challenges every time or your team will all wait until the end to complete the challenges. But, what an awesome surprise to learn you now have two ways to qualify for a challenge.
